The Sam Houston State University College of Criminal Justice (SHSU CJ) has named Heather Alaniz-Salas as the new Internship and Career Services director. Drawing from her experience as a first-generation college student, Alaniz-Salas understands the challenges students may face when entering the workforce.
“Securing internships and career opportunities in the criminal legal system without established network connections can be problematic,” Alaniz-Salas said.
“It’s my sincere dedication to ensure every student obtains meaningful internships that pave the way for future employment.”
The SHSU CJ internship program is also being overhauled, offering more flexible options which can allow students to explore career options earlier than their senior year.
“Instead of waiting until they have 90 credits, students can now begin mini-internships after their first year,” said SHSU CJ Senior Associate Dean Danielle Boisvert. “Many of our students are first-generation and employed. They want internship opportunities but can’t commit to 40 hours a week because of their work and family responsibilities. To address this, we’ve made internship credit hours variable, offering greater flexibility.”
Boisvert noted that nearly 1,600 undergraduate CJ students are now eligible for an internship under these new guidelines.
“My goal is for every eligible CJ student at SHSU to gain practical experience through an internship, preparing them for their careers,” she added.
Students can now choose a 10, 20, 30 or 40-hour internship and can work multiple internships throughout their undergraduate career.
Alaniz-Salas adds that the revamped internship program also allows students to explore the many career options that await them in the criminal justice field.
“By starting internships earlier in their college journey, students can gain insight into various career paths, refine professional competencies and establish meaningful connections with industry professionals,” Alaniz-Salas said. “This not only enhances their marketability upon graduation but also empowers them to make informed decisions about their future career trajectories.”
Alaniz-Salas says the SHSU CJ Internship program is also available to online students and emphasized her team's dedication to meet students where they are.
