Dr. Peter Lehmann has been awarded the 2023 New Scholar Award for his work in the field of Criminal Justice by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS).

The accolade recognizes outstanding scholarly contributions by a Criminal Justice scholar who has received their PhD within the past six years. “It’s really humbling to receive this award,” Dr. Lehmann said. “ACJS is so well known and has such a wide influence over the discipline, it’s overwhelming.”

To be considered for the research-based award, candidates must be nominated by at least one other ACJS member. Dr. Lehmann was nominated by three scholars, including SHSU College of Criminal Justice Associate Professor Dr. Ryan Randa. “Peter is a tremendous talent. He demonstrates a commitment to quality work, having authored or co-authored over 30 manuscripts in highly visible journals that have a huge impact in our field,” Dr. Randa said. “Our students also benefit greatly from his dedication to student success, serving as a mentor to a number of our PhD and MA students.”

Although he is receiving this award as a new scholar, Dr. Lehmann has been involved with ACJS since he was a graduate student at Florida State University and proudly maintains that relationship as a professional scholar. As an Assistant Professor at SHSU, he regularly submits articles to ACJS journals. His most recent work was published in one of the field’s leading journals, Justice Quarterly, titled, “Exclusionary Citizenship: Public Punitiveness and Support for Voting Restrictions.”

Dr. Lehmann will receive the award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences during their annual meeting this March in National Harbor, MD. While he’s thrilled to accept the accolade, Dr. Lehmann credits his mentors and colleagues for this accomplishment. “I’ve been so lucky and fortunate to have all of these different people to mentor and support me,” Dr. Lehmann said.
