Students and Faculty Receive Awards at ASC Conference

College of Criminal Justice students and faculty have been nominated for several awards presented by the American Society of Criminology (ASC), and many were recognized at the upcoming National conference in November.

The American Society of Criminology is an organization dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge concerning crime and delinquency. Each year, ASC holds a conference designed to facilitate the sharing of information and ongoing research in the field of criminology and criminal justice.  The conference highlights students, faculty, and practitioners who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of criminological research, practice, and pedagogy. The College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University has a tradition of participation and recognition in this organization. This year is no different, with three students and two faculty members being recognized for their work in the field. The following are set to be recognized at this year’s ASC conference:

Dr. Breanna Boppre, Assistant Professor in the Department of Victim Studies: ASC’s Division of Victimology Faculty Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Shelly Clevenger, Department Chair of the Department of Victim Studies: ASC’s Division of Critical Criminology and Social Justice Praxis Award

Alondra D. Garza, Criminal Justice and Criminology Ph.D. student: ASC’s Ruth Peterson Fellowship for Racial and Ethnic Diversity.

Kristina Block, Criminal Justice and Criminology Ph.D. student: ASC’s Gene Carte Student Paper Award.

Shamika Kelley, Criminal Justice and Criminology Ph.D. student: ASC’s Division of Women and Crime Saltzman Award for Contributions to Practice.

Dean Phillip Lyons of the College of Criminal Justice, was very proud of the representation the college will have at the conference, saying, “We are thrilled that our faculty continue to lead the way not only in the conduct of relevant, timely, and quality research; but also, in communicating the knowledge built on that research to our students.

The College of Criminal Justice is dedicated to making an impact in the field. Our students and faculty have done a remarkable job at providing research, input and knowledge to practitioners and researchers around the world. We are extremely proud of the work that our faculty and students have done, and we are glad that they are able to represent the College of Criminal Justice on a large scale.
