Career Services at Sam Houston State University will present a panel of criminal justice professionals during “What’s Your Story?,” a week-long series designed to introduce students to careers available in different fields. The Criminal Justice Panel will include:
- Juan Torres - Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Police and former federal law enforcement agent
- Melissa Carter – Brazos County Victims Services
- Katherine Langston - Bureau of Diplomatic Security
- Investigator Angelica Galczynski -- Montgomery County Crime Lab
The panelists will focus on sharing their stories about how they found their professions and the lessons they learned along the way.
Torres, a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Army and a native of Puerto Rico, began his career in the Shrevesport, LA. Police Department, where he served as a member of the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force. In 2002, he joined the Department of Homeland Security as a field agent assigned to the Dallas office to prevent future terrorist attacks. He later joined the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Police Department, where he served as a patrol agency, undercover agent, field training officer, hostage/crisis negotiation and honor guard team member for that agency.
Carter has been the Victim Assistance Coordinator for the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office since 2002. She works as a liaison between crime victims and the assistant district attorneys preparing cases for trial and coordinates with social service agencies to get the services victims need . She is currently assigned to the Crimes Against Women Unit, working with victims of family violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Before her current position, Carter was a training specialist at Twin City Mission providing community presentations on domestic violence.
Langston began her career as a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service, where she was stationed in Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. and travelled the world on protective details. She conducted various investigation into financial fraud, was a certified forensic examiner, and was temporarily assigned to Latvia, Hungry and the U.K. on network intrusion investigations. In 2011, she transferred to the U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service and is assigned to the Houston office, where she serves on the Human Trafficking Task Force investigating passport and visa fraud.
Galczynski is a Crime Scene Investigator with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. After graduating from the Montgomery County Basic Peace Officer Academy, Galczynski received more than 600 hours of specialized training in various aspects of forensic science. She currently serves as an adjunct instructor for the academy, as a guest lecturer at high schools and colleges, and as a volunteer on the Public Safety Diver for underwater search and recovery with the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Lake Division. Carter is pursuing her master’s degree in Leadership and Management at Sam Houston State University.
