Learn more about violence against women during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Crime Victim Services Alliance, the Crime Victims’ Institute and the Montgomery County Women Shelter will host a series of events to educate students about violence against women, including domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual abuse and incest, LGBTQ issues, and women assaulted for political reasons.

The month will kick off on Oct. 11 with the Clothesline Project, which decorates t-shirts to honor survivors of violence. The shirts allow people to express their emotions and serves as a visual reminder that victims are not alone in their struggles. The public is invited to decorate a t-shirt in support of survivors from 9 am to 2 pm in the Texas Room on the first floor of the Criminal Justice Center.

Because women suffer from a variety of abuses, the shirts are color-coded. These include:

  • Yellow/Beige for women who are battered or assaults
  • Red/Pink/Orange for survivors of rape and sexual assault
  • Blue/Green for survivors of incest or sexual abuse
  • Purple/Lavender for women attacked because of their sexual orientation
  • Black for women assaulted for political reason

Those shirts will be on display outside the Criminal Justice Center on Oct. 18 (Rain date: Oct. 25) to show solidarity with victims of violence.

On Thursday, Oct. 19 in the Lowman Student Center Theatre, there will be a screening of “Power and Control: Domestic Violence in America,” followed by a panel discussion.

The documentary focuses on the case of Kim Mosher, a Minnesota mother of three who escaped from her husband after 10 years of emotional and physical abuse and the challenges victims face in society, particularly during economic downturns. The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion by local advocates.

These events may serve as a trigger for past and present victims of abuse. Counselors will be on hand for support.
