Learn more about how to become a voice for victims in the criminal justice system at the Victim Studies Career Fair.
Whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, this year’s event provides an opportunity to meet face-to-face with organizations and agencies that serve victims in the field. These representatives can provide insight on the day-to-day aspects of working with crime victims as well as job and internship opportunities.
“There is a growing awareness of the need to integrate victims into the criminal justice system,” said Dr. Leana Bouffard, a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology and Director of the Crime Victims’ Institute. “In the past, victims didn’t have much of a voice. Now there are victim advocacy groups and community service agencies for victims.”
The College of Criminal Justice offers the only program of its kind in Texas and is one of only a few nationwide. Undergraduate students can choose from a Bachelor of Art or Bachelor of Science in Victim Studies, which includes courses in criminal justice, political science, business, and psychology. The Master of Victim Service Management is targeted for jobs in direct service provision, organizational management, and social policy development. Victim Studies graduates are prepared to work in such areas as victim services agencies, police departments, correctional facilities, child protective services, programs for at-risk youth and legal advocacy for victim. As victim advocates, professionals help by explaining legal procedures and resources and by providing physical, psychological and emotional support and encouragement to victims.

“We want our students exposed to as many career opportunities as possible,” says Vinessa Mundorff, associate director of Career Services. “If students need to polish up their resume, we encourage them to stop by during walk-in hours on Tuesdays from 10 am to 2 pm and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 - 4 pm, or call to set up an appointment. We also offer mock interviewing online through JOBSforKATS.com, called InterviewStream. Our counselors critique your recorded mock interview sessions and send you personal feedback on how to improve your interview skills.”
