College Launches Homeland Security Minor

A minor in Homeland Security Studies will be available for undergraduate students beginning in the Fall.

“The Department continues to evolve and expand with the initiation of new concentrations and course offerings,” said Dr. Jurg Gerber, Chair of the Department of Security Studies. “Our traditional emphasis on private security, intelligence, and security management will be expanded to include all facets of the Homeland Security Enterprise. These developments will allow us to better prepare our students to meet the demands of ensuring the safety and security of our communities.”

The 18-credit minor includes three required courses, two restricted electives, and one free elective in area electives in the Department of Security Studies. The required courses include:

  • Introduction to Homeland Security
  • Global Terrorism and Homeland Security
  • U.S. Security Post-9/11

Students also choose nine hours from the following options:

  • Homeland Security Intelligence
  • Homeland Security and Emergency Management
  • Border Security
  • Drug Policy and Security
  • Critical Infrastructure

The College currently offers a Master’s degree in Homeland Security Studies as well as certificate programs at the graduate level in Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Management.
