The annual CJ Career Fair will be held on March 2 to introduce students and alumni to diverse job opportunities in the field and potential employers in federal, state and local agencies; non-profit organizations; and private industry.
More than 50 employers participated in last year’s CJ Career Fair, and 95 percent indicated they plan to interview students from Sam Houston State University for open positions. This year’s participants include federal agencies; state and local law enforcement agencies; school district police; airport police; state and county correctional agencies; a law firm; juvenile parole and probation; state and non-profit victim advocacy groups; and private security.
To prepare for the Career Fair, CJ Career Counselor Michelle Haynes will be available in the lobby during the week of Feb. 22 on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to review resumes.
“Having a resume is essential to your job search process,” said Haynes. “The main purpose of a resume is to get the employer’s attention to invite you to an interview. You want your resume to stand out from other candidates, so sure to stop by the CJ lobby during Career Fair week to have your resume critiqued.”
On Monday, Feb. 29, CJ Internship Coordinator Dr. Jim Dozier will discuss more than 300 internships offered in agencies and companies around the world and the process to get them. Internships provide excellent opportunities to get real-life experience to add to your resume. Internships are taken during the senior year, require full-time work with a participating agency, and provides nine credits toward your degree. Plan early in your college career to identify the best options available.
On Tuesday, March 1, the College will offer a live interviewing workshop to demonstrate the do’s and don’ts for getting a job in the criminal justice field. The session will feature mock student interviews with criminal justice professionals, and Haynes will provide the tips on successful strategies that can be used.
Whether you are a freshman or a senior, it is never too early to begin looking for a job and networking in the field. Don’t forget to dress professionally, bring a copy of your resume, research employers and prepare your 30- second “elevator speech.” Here is a list of the employers signed up for the Career Fair and a web site for their agency. Good luck!
